The Story Behind the Rebellion
Like all good ideas, Rebel Seeds was born in a bar on a Friday afternoon. We bonded over our common frustration – there was a lack of new, high yielding crop varieties for livestock consumption. Particularly, there was a gap for wheat well suited to lower rainfall vertosol country surrounding the Downs feedlot industry.
WHY CHOOSE US?
We are not a big corporate – we just want to help farmers make the most of their crop.
Each of us live, breathe and sow the product we sell.
We have a deep understanding of what works on your farm, and a deep understanding of what will work on your farm.
We are committed to collaborating with farmers to find region-specific solutions.
As farmers, we felt a disconnect between what the growers wanted and what breeders were looking for. It has become our mission to collaborate with and empower farmers to get the most out of their crop.
We travelled to Mexico’s International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) in Mexico to find out what different strains would perform in Australia. Borlaug – named after Norman Borlaug, known as the ‘father of wheat breeding’ – immediately caught our attention.
We instantly saw how Borlaug could change the game in Australia
We came back to Australia with a cup full of Borlaug seeds and began four years of rigorous testing. It was soon clear that Borlaug 100 was one of the best suited varieties for our region.
The seed delivered high yields in good seasons, routinely out-performing other common or current/common varieties. In tough seasons, Borlaug stood resiliently and continued to perform well with little rainfall.
We have since witnessed Borlaug 100 transform yields for hundreds of farmers.
In 2023, Borlaugh 100 topped the field at three National Variety Trial sites in Queensland.
Nindigully – 2.5t/ha
Mungindi – 2.79t/ha
Emerald – 4.34t/ha
If it works on our farm, we want to share it with you. In 2024, Borlaug 100 received an Australian Hard classification.
This classification allows Borlaug 100 to be delivered into H2 segregations at bulk-handling sites across Queensland and northern New South Wales, benefiting local growers with better prices and enhancing its export potential. The classification means it qualifies for H2 (11.5 – 31% protein) or any grade lower.
We currently have a further two commercially available varieties, Rebel Rat and Rebel 65, in the NVT.
